Trying to Hold It All Together: The Weight You Were Never Meant to Hold

Carrying More Than You Were Meant To

There’s a subtle shift that happens in how we carry responsibility. Some of us withdraw—we hesitate, avoid, feel unequipped. Others overfunction—we push, perform, take on more than our share in work and relationships. Different expressions, same root: we start believing it’s on us to produce the outcome, to hold everything together, to prove our value. And over time, that weight shows up as pressure, impatience, or quiet resentment. We’re no longer just participating—we’re trying to be the source.

Connection, Not Production

But real fruit doesn’t come from striving harder. Think of a living vine—roots deep in the ground drawing life, a steady trunk carrying strength, and branches simply staying connected. The branch doesn’t force fruit; it receives what’s already flowing through it. That’s the invitation Jesus Christ gives—to abide, to remain connected, to live from a source that sustains rather than something we have to manufacture. Not passive, not disengaged—fully alive, but not alone.

A Simple Return

So maybe the next step isn’t to try harder—but to notice. Where are you overreaching… or pulling back? Where have you taken on the role of producing what was never yours to carry? Just becoming aware of that shift can be enough to return—to reconnect, to receive, and to participate in the kind of life where fruit grows naturally.
